As the sun was setting, her skin turned golden, and I knew I couldn’t let her walk away without checking out Morsel at Larimer Lounge!
I wouldn’t consider myself an expert on what makes you successful in the music business, but I can pretty much assume one thing: If you can draw, you’ll do alright. It feels like every time I see Morsel they come with their own built-in audience that isn’t just there to support–they are there to party. From the very start of their opening set, in support of Jive Tribe, the crowd was restless, anxiously awaiting their local favorites. The crowd danced, the crowd cheered, the crowd knew the lyrics, and all this for a group opening up for another local act on a Thursday night.
But once you hear Morsel, the question no longer becomes why is everyone here, but more why isn’t EVERYONE here? Their songwriting brings with it the most desired facets of what makes a nu-grass band compelling, with catchy melodies, tight lead work, and a live show less concerned with tradition and more with the user experience. Touching, sweet minor and slow tunes with big and bold choruses like “How We Met” and “Mountain Song” are prime examples of their enthralling songwriting. They also have their own party anthems, such as the quirky “Banana Bread” and the intense chorus of “Crab Meatballs”, the latter of which featured a jam on one of the most preeminent surf songs, “Pipeline”, by the Chantays. Not to mention a killer take on the Rolling Stones’ classic, “No Excuses”. Needless to say, Morsel designed a set list that had a little bit of everything for everybody.
When you experience Morsel’s live show, you feel like you’re a part of something communal. It’s a supportive atmosphere that cultivates a live experience that feels like both a celebration of the band’s music and a downright party with your friends. At its core, it’s what live music is all about.
