On the final night of the Beanstalk Music Festival, before the final Beans set and the yet-to-be-announced Yak Attack set, The Beanstalk All-Stars treated the crowd to an amalgam of funk covers and jamtronica improvisation. The band was led by jamtronica pioneers Marc Brownstein (The Disco Biscuits) on bass and Aaron Magner (The Disco Biscuits) on keys who both expertly held their roles in steering the boat through each cover or jam. TAUK‘s Matthew Jalbert filled the guitarist role, loaning his highly technical skills to the mix. He would end up pulling double-duty as he would later join Yak Attack for their unannounced 4th set. Motet drummer Dave Watts showed off his ability to shift from 112bpm jamtronica beats to G-Funk rhythms without blinking an eye and provided the strong backbone that every newly minted super-group desperately requires. Magic Beans keyboardist Casey Russell joined in on the fun for a cover of the Dr. John classic “Right Place, Wrong Time” to the delight of the crowd saturated with fans. Then last but in no way least, Kim Dawson proved one of the strongest forces on that stage all weekend. From her vicious vocal attack on the chorus of “Like A Feather” to her rollicking over the Robert Plant vocal lines in “The Ocean”, when Kim Dawson was front-and-center, the tune was injected with an energy and passion that elevated the performances tenfold. I believe she summed up the spirit of the set the best when a fan ironically yelled out to them after an especially fiery number, to “Cool It Down” to which Kim responded “That’s not how we do.” – That’s the spirit indeed!
