I literally need you to check out Consider the Source live at Lost Lake right now!
On the final day of the band’s “Metatour 2019”, Consider the Source put on a spectacle to be seen at Lost Lake, performing several tunes from their newest album, “You Are Literally A Metaphor”, as well as a few fan-favorites and even a debut performance.
The band’s highly technical blend of prog-metal jazz fusion was on full display at Lost Lake, highlighting their intensely tight playing and frantically punctual attack. It’s borderline shocking when you realize they are a power trio, considering the big sound they produce. Each member is fully tuned-in with each other and is remarkably talented with their weapon of choice. Those unfamiliar with the band should know that their guitarist, Gabriel Marin, plays a double-kneck guitar, one kneck of which is fret-less and outfitted with a customized MIDI pick-up that allows for a more expansive palette of sounds to play with, ranging from realistic horn sounds (see “It Is Known”) to more other-worldly tones, (see “Many Words Of Disapproval”) all of which add a broad range of color to each composition. And he certainly has quite the palette to choose from, plugging into not one, not two, but three separate pedal boards. Whatever the band lacks in members, they more than make up for it with a sonic arsenal of synthesized tones. This intermingles with the eastern influenced drumming of Jeff Mann, driving each tune with odd meters and unique time signatures. This is all held together by the steadfast bass playing of John Ferrara who employs a style nuanced with enough tapping and slapping to dazzle, while providing the foundation and direction for all of their numbers.
Consider The Source have one of the most intense live shows around. They are a hurricane of notes somehow controlled by the musical sorcery possessed by the three members on-stage. They attack each song as if it were the last time they will ever be played, and it’s that unwavering passion and dedicated execution that make them one of the most compelling live acts I’ve seen in a while.
