Halfway through the week – how about some heartwarming music from singer-songwriter Emily Hearn!
I’m really excited to share this recording for a few reasons. For starters, I thoroughly enjoyed this set and I think the recording came out very well. It was also one of those sets that just hit me at the perfect time and place. My wife and I were celebrating our 10 year anniversary together and first year of marriage the weekend we went to see Stephen Kellogg‘s #PostCardTour. I had never heard of Emily before and didn’t see her on the archive so I wasn’t sure if she was taper friendly but we got VIP tickets which included a meet-and-greet with SK so we had to be there early. Always being down to tape an act I figured I’d ask. After asking Shady (SK’s tour manager) he said he’d ask her. He came back from the Green Room a few minutes later and said “Yeah she’s totally cool with it”. Really glad he did, because her set ended up being one of my favorite I’ve taped/attended this year. Her band is just her and her husband and her songs are predominantly about their love and devotion to each other. They harmonize as well. How freakin’ romantic is that?!
The set began with her song “Waking Up Again” which started as a softly picked tune about being trapped in a house during the winter craving warm weather. It made solid use of a looping pedal which added the first layer of guitar and then eventually swirling vocal harmonies which filled the room. Emily is a natural story teller and provided several funny moments throughout her set, my personal favorite was the story regarding her song “Volcano”. I won’t spoil it but if you’re a Jane The Virgin fan, you’ll want to hear it. Songs like “Paris Or Wherever We Are” and “Found A Heart” really resonate with anyone who’s been deeply in love and invested in the life another person. Her husband’s piano work helps provide subtle nuance to the songs and his vocal harmonies fit perfectly with Emily’s. There wasn’t a single song I didn’t like during this set, so much so that I went and bought their LP at the merch booth and had both of them sign it. Don’t usually fanboy out like that but I truly loved their music. Happy Anniversary to them as well as they celebrated their 5 year on I believe October 6th!
Thanks to Emily Hearn and The Walnut Room for being cool with taping/sharing shows. Go see live music! #spacetapes
