Trust me, you should find a way to listen to Envy Alo opening things up at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(Other Side)!
Kicking off a night to celebrate Part & Parcel’s new album release, Envy Alo brought a trio of their own new songs for their return to the Cervantes’ Other Side stage. Kicking things off with one of their original staples, “Prom Queen”, the band was a shot of adrenaline to the quickly gathering Saturday night crowd. After an especially shreddy solo to close out the number, the band kicked into the first of the trio of new tunes, a song called “Give In To The Light”. The song put lead singer Callie Morrocco‘s powerful vocals front and center as she led the band through the reflective lyrics. They then performed a stellar cover of Jerry Garcia Band’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do”, which has become a standard of their live repetoire and served as a platform for some big solos from keyboardist Aaron Pettine, guitarist Kevin Hinder, and saxophonist Kevin Supina.
Next up, the band performed the second of the trio of new tunes, a Supina-penned song called “Trust”. The chorus’ hopeful lyrics blend harmoniously well with the song’s structure, and the tune provided the second bit of musical exploration of the set. The band then paid tribute to International Women’s Day with the Callie-penned “Be Good”, before launching into the third new song, “Only Way”, a soulfully gritty rock number with an intensity similar to “Prom Queen”.
The band then took things to a funkier level, covering Lettuce’s “Do It Like You Do”, before taking things down a notch after a smooth segue into the sultry “Tigress”, and bringing the funk right back up again for a cover of Jamiroquai’s “Cosmic Girl”. This entire segment featured sit-ins from the Wilkolak brothers, as well as trombonist Nadav Nirenberg from Brasstracks. The horns helped elevate each number by accenting the peaks and executing several pointed solos, especially in “Tigress”. The set then closed out with “Either Day”, which featured the newest addition to Part & Parcel, guitarist Matt Flaherty. The result was a flurry of solos from the entire band, each a response to the last, performed in as upbeat a rhythm as any tune that night, bundled together with a ragtime chorus and swinging verses. A fiery yet fitting way to end a set that started as such.
