Blow the horn and tap the tambourine! Check out Fellowship Of The Wing opening things up at Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple!
There is no more appropriate place to enjoy “kind” music in Denver (or possibly the country) than Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple. The entire place is a living monument to the culture and music spurned by the legendary jamband. Last Friday night was no exception as John Kadlecik brought together his most recent foray into dead music with Fellowship Of The Wing. The Furthur alumni brought along fellow alum Jay Lane to hold down the percussion section as well as the quintessential duo of Todd Stoops (RAQ/Electric Beethoven) and Reed Mathis (Electric Beethoven) to bring forth an interpretation of the GD legacy that personified the emotion and loose improvisational feel of the musical works they were interpreting.
The set featured some of Johnny K’s original work and a spattering of Grateful Dead material that kept the crowd entrenched in americana roots rock for almost 2 hours. The band, all of whom have experience playing with each other in both this group as well as several other varied groups, gelled well and provided many inspired moments. Reed Mathis’ lyrical work on “The Ladder” was revelatory and elevated the set with positivity and a sense of jubilation. His bass work on the ensuing “Black Muddy River” featured his signature octave modulated sound dripping with emotion. Some really great improv moments in “Cassidy”, “The Business” and the Barlow/Weir penned “Let It Grow”, showing-off the band’s penchant for exploration and tight performance. From John K’s astute rendering of Jerry’s tone, Reed’s billowing bass work, Stoops’ fierce keys playing and Jay Lane’s warm attack, the band commits to a sound that both pays tribute to the original bodies of work while breathing new life into their execution. Great set to start off a two-night co-headlining run at the venue!
