I can’t believe we’re looking at the first #MusicMonday of the last month of the year! Helping to bring us on home, enjoy some #FreeMusic from Hayley Jane and the Primates!
This show was both a headlining spot at Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple as well as their debut in the centennial state. Their brand of psychedelic rock and old-school R&B brings a fresh dimension to the jam scene. Hayley Jane‘s voice sounds like a mixture of raw Janis Joplin emotion and Regina Spektor tenderness. Her vocal melodies are exemplary and one of the areas where the band truly shines; songs like “I Can Do It (Poo Jam)”, “We Found Out”, “Madeline” and “Cosmic Katrina” to name a few, have been stuck in my head pretty much since the show ended. Each having a catchy verse or chorus that infectiously creeps into the back of your mind and gets you humming without even realizing it. The staccato verses in “Cosmic Katrina” are still rattling around in my brain (“Apple core, Baltimore….”). Quirky lyrics also help keep the songs engaging, I really enjoyed “Eliza”, specifically Hayley’s delivery of the verses, telling us all the story of a manic individual trying to hold it together while being agitated by hearing the name of an unfamiliar woman. While the songwriting is definitely at the forefront, the band still found space to jam a bit in songs like “Make It Alright”, “New Speedway Boogie” and “Iko Iko” the latter of which featured Phour Point O guitarist Mike Pedersen. Two sets of great songwriting, tight playing, nods to the Grateful Dead and overall just a real good time. Can’t wait for them to return!

[1] “Iko Iko” featured Mike Pederson (Phour Point O) on guitar.
Taper Notes: FOB DFC (taper nook) mics raised around 7′. Vocals were unfortunately very low in the PA mix. The crowd was also very talkative, especially during the first set. EQ’d and applied High Pass Filter to reduce boominess and boost the vocals.
Thank you to Hayley Jane and the Primates and Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple for being cool with taping/sharing shows. Go see live music and tip your bartender! #spacetapes
