As the sun began to set on the final day of the Beanstalk Music Festival the crowd was treated to a raging set from the Wisconsin based bluegrass group Horseshoes & Hand Grenades. Through a locked-in percussive style, emotive vocals and powerful leads, the band espoused a musical attitude that was ready to take names. Their songs are melodically strapping, outfitted with beautifully pointed lead lines traded off between the talented band members. Playing to their audience, the band had a discerning cover selection, sandwiching songs like the Grateful Dead’s “Fire On The Mountain” and Pink Floyd’s “Time” in-between originals “Danville Girl” and “Whiskey” respectively. The melody of “Whiskey” is a beautifully melancholic and minor jaunt that a songwriter could riff on forever. The band even injected some improvised lyrics referencing the festival, the beans and their “one great big fucking scene”. They also performed a rousing rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” which really went the distance in a jam featuring some especially fiery fiddle work. The band also performed a poignant version of “Ripple” which served as a communal sing-a-long and wasn’t even listed on the set list. Maybe the band felt a tinge of inspiration from the beautiful mountain-side and the community that had popped up in the valley for three days of music. Whatever the reason, the crowd appreciated the sentiment and was more than happy to indulge the band in the moment. The set closing tune “Keep My Skillet Good & Greasy” was one last incendiary display of pointed string trashing that showed off the bands ability to feed off each other and develop big moments through patient builds. By the time the tune catches its breath, it was over along with the epic set.
