I’d believe in anyone…#spacetapes got a Howie Day recording live at The Soiled Dove Underground!
Making his triumphant return to the stage, Howie Day performed his first show of a two-night-run at The Soiled Dove in front of a packed crowd that was anxious to welcome the singer-songwriter back to the Mile High city. The set was filled with a good mixture of old and new tunes that spanned his four full-length albums, many of which were delivered with his signature acoustic and vocal loops, creating a proverbial whirlwind of acoustic and vocal textures that enthralled Friday night’s crowd.
The set kicked off with a couple of fan favorites, starting first with “Sorry, So Sorry”, which featured a mesmerizing loop-jam in the outro. Day’s patented one-man-band loops would make several other appearances throughout the set, with the hypnotic “Bunnies”, the blissfully dreamlike “Disco”, and the solemn progression of “Ghost” complete with the “Beams Of Light” jam to close it out. The set would also feature some popular finger-picking tunes such as “Anyone”, “Worry”, as well as his most recent single, “Treetops”, off his 2015 album, “Lanterns”.
Throughout the show, Day seemed to be in good spirits, joking about tunes such as “Perfect Time Of Day”, light-heatedly prefacing it by saying, “here’s a song about death,” and as the crowd laughed, adding “…I’m glad that you’re so comfortable with that”; quipping that “She Says” was now 20 years old and not being sure if the song has stood the test of time or if he’s just “hanging on”; and also making reference to his dog Henry, commenting that they had “the same initials”. The encore featured the combo of the slow and earnest “Torches”, followed-up by the commercial smash hit “Collide” to wrap up the show.
With now over 20 years of touring under his belt, Howie Day has shown that his music has the ability to last. Through his poignant live show that delivers his tunes in their stripped down and most vulnerable, you get an artist whose music finds space in the recesses of your soul, snuggled deep with a powerful vocal delivery and captivating looping compositions that manage to continue captivating audiences for two decades and counting. That’s service you can believe in.
