It seems like the perfect time of day for some Howie Day performing live at The Soiled Dove Undergound!
After becoming rattled by the current global pandemic that has kept Howie Day from touring extensively, a year later we find ourselves in a familiar space, back at The Soiled Dove Underground for two nights of songs from Maine’s most accomplished singer-songwriter. He even mentioned as such after “Be There”, noting that he hadn’t played a show since the last run at The Soiled Dove, back in January 2020. This time around, Howie seemed to bring a little extra gusto to the set, performing almost an entire extra hour’s worth of material compared to his last visit, to the delight of fans hungry for another round of music.
From the get-go, Howie explained the show was going to be a bit more of a laid-back request format. Throughout the set, he was constantly polling the crowd for opinions on what should be played next. This resulted in a plethora of tunes that were not performed at last year’s run or the night before, including “Kristina”, “After You”, and the fan-favorite “Morning After”, as well as some deeper cuts, including the opening track from the 2011 EP “Ceasefire” of the same name, and the third track “Make Peace” off of his most recent 2015 release “Lanterns”.
Day’s signature looping style was prominent as well, featuring songs like the set opener “Bunnies”, the fake set closer “Madrigals”, and the real set closer “Ghost”, all helping craft the ethereal aura of whirling delays and layered acoustic sounds that have become an idiomatic part of his sound. There was even a performance of “After You”, an older looping composition that never made it onto an album but found its way into the set list, per fan request, showcasing the dedication his fans have for his music, even after 20 years.
Howie left it all on the stage for his second and final night at The Soiled Dove. During “Brace Yourself”, you can hear the beginnings of him losing his voice. Based on the extended set when compared to the previous year (which clocked in at just a little over two hours compared to last year’s set at around an hour and twenty minutes), and his own comment about “going long”, it felt as if the singer-songwriter didn’t want to leave… And based on the reaction, neither did the Denver crowd. Hopefully, next time the world will be in a better place, but even if not, at least we’ll have another round of Howie Day’s music.
