I got something smooth and phishy for you…Check out JAZZ is PHSH headlining The Fox Theatre!

Combining jazz and Phish seems like a perfect match: The band molded by improvisation and heavy composition re-interpreted by the genre that re-imagined both. JAZZ is PHSH brought it all to The Fox Theatre last Friday night to treat Boulder fans to smooth jazz compositions of the songs they all revere so deeply.

The revolving lineup was as impressive as ever, even with some last minute switches. Keyboardist Domi Degalle had to have emergency surgery that prevented her from performing, which led to a surprise sit-in from Asher Fulero of the Emancipator Ensemble live band. Nationally acclaimed jazz guitarist Lee Barbour, who was described as “one of the best jazz guitarists in the country” by jazz legend Joe Beck, filled in for co-founder Matt Chase, who had scheduling conflicts. Brother Adam Chase led the band superbly with his masterful command of the drums, laying the foundation for each song with a congruous focus. Rubblebucket‘s Adam Dotson and The New MastersoundsDaniel Casares held down the horn section impeccably, punching up the compositions with perfect accent. Last but certainly not least, Ghost Note bassist extraordinaire Cody Wright was brilliant all evening, adding just a bit of funk when necessary, and wowing the crowd with his solo during the encore. The band even included some local flavor to spice up the show, inviting up Analog Son keys master Eric Luba to sit-in for an especially funky version of “46 Days”, one of the stand-out performances of the evening.

JAZZ is PHSH is as great as ever. Playing Phish is hard enough without having to reinterpret the whole thing in a highly technical yet loosely improvisational jazz style; still, Jazz is PHSH always manages to not only nail the composition, but also manages to add just enough flair to make their own mark on the music and give it new life. The beauty in their performance really is that you don’t have to be a phan to enjoy their music. This is the kind of music that brings Phish phans to jazz and brings jazz fans to Phish, and at its core, that’s really what music is all about.
