Yes, you know it’s Prime Time when I got Kung Fu slangin’ tunes at Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple!
Energy levels were off the charts at Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple last weekend as Kung Fu capped off the second night of their two-night run at the venue, with two sets dripping with high-octane funk. The onslaught of Kung Fu’s sound comes from the strength of each of its members, all five of which are on constant display, from Tim Palmieri’s jedi-shred mastery on the guitar, Rob Sommerville’s fiercely punchy horn work, Chris DeAngelis’ richly smooth bass lines, Beau Sasser’s eclectic spectrum of keyboard sounds, all riding the never-flailingly tight drum beats of Adrian Tramontano… The band is a vibrant union of funk tones that coalesce into a vivacious party of sound where everyone’s invited. Their songs have this big energy that wraps around the room and brings everyone in close to be a part of it. Tunes like the opener, “Prime Time Rib”, “Cookie Monster” and “Bottleneck” cut through the crowd like an MC encouraging everyone to dance, grabbing you by the hand and spinning you around. Their cover of Weather Report’s classic “Birdland” was a personal highlight, with stylings that delivered a bit more swing and funk while paying proper tribute to the original composition.
No matter what the song, Kung Fu seems genuinely staunch in their conviction to making sure everyone gets down. A true party band with a vibrancy that bubbles over the stage and into the crowd with every set they play. Their tenacity for riding a groove, ripping a dazzling solo, or putting their own spin on a well-loved original help to curate the fun-loving atmosphere that has become their standard experience: consistently awesome, consistently funky.

Show Notes: This was the second of a two-night headlining run at Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple. Liebermonster opened the show.
Taper Notes: Mics were setup on-stage ORTF raised around 4′. The board feed was mono (made stereo in post). The mix is a true 50/50. There was an issue with the feed and as a result the patch doesn’t come in until around 3 minutes into the show but remains with no issues for the rest of the show. Many thanks to FOH engineer Casey Tanton for the board patch and great sound!
Thank you to Kung Fu and Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple for being cool with taping/sharing shows. Go see live music and tip your bartenders! #spacetapes
