Is the box Lavender or the juice inside of it? Both? Either way its funky fresh! Check out Lavender Juicebox at Globe Hall!
Kicking things off for the first annual Produce Aisle Jamboree – Lavender Juicebox performed “The Deep” – a funky instrumental with sharp changes and a soulful feel. The following tune, “Fool’s Paradise” starts with a bossa-nova-type vibe before blending in a more funky jam which featured swift guitar licks battling various rhythmic dynamics before descending into a dark outro then resolving itself back to the intro which carried over the heavier influence, with a nice little Metallica tease for good measure.
Next up was the psychedelic “Sweet Dee” which featured Floyd-esque phrasings (or possibly intentional teasings) underlying a building intensity that eventually converged into a more rapid fire guitar assault. The band shifts their dynamics with such ease and fluidity that it’s hard to pin their sound. The moment you feel you’ve nailed it down, they shift. Sometimes slowly or sometimes on a dime. The next tune “Cow Catcher” contained odd-ball lyrics and more prog-rock riffing. The guitar work in the outro is especially impressive as the band chugs through the pontificated outro, the lead weaves in between each downward note, whirling around each with purposeful intent.
Next up was “Invisible” a tune that reminded me a lot of Umphrey’s McGee; adopting a more classic song structure with proggy-palm-muted riffs, whirling guitar leads and melodic vocals. It eventually segued directly into the band’s single “Small Talk”, which was one of the most memorable of their set. From the verse/chorus to the epic mid-section through the outro, the band takes the crowd on a journey led by harmonizing guitar leads and extremely tight playing. The set closing “BFE” was equally epic, taking the listener through various stages of the tune with a rapid release and double guitar attack. Kudos to their new drummer as well for absolutely crushing his first show with the band.
