Life is good. Strange, but…at least we got some fresh Liebermonster recordings from Your Mom’s House!

Kicking off a big night of music, Liebermonster opened things up with a cover of “Sing A Song Of Songs”, which introduced stirring leads from the horn section of Seth Garland and Chris White and guitarist/front man Shane Lieberman. Things then took a funkier turn as the band performed “The Authorities” off their most recent record, 2018’s “Murmuration”. The song blends an electronica drum beat with salsa sensibilities resulting in a bouncy jaunt, driven by steadfast horn playing. Next up the band performed “Strange, But” a tune that toes the line between afro-cuban jazz stylings and a surf-ska chorus, all bundled with a catchy chorus.

Afterward, the band launched into “Snagglepuss”, a big-band-type tune inspired by the likes of Benny Goodman and driven by the focused percussion section. The fusion of styles continued with a more afro-beat inspired tune named “Back To The Garden”. Wasting no time, Liebermonster pressed on with their set, laying on a thick wave of synth tones before crashing in with the jazz-funk tune “Safina (Musicwa)”, which featured a locked-in jam with a break-beat rhythm that provided a compelling backdrop for one of the more interesting improv moments of the set.

Keeping things fresh, the band then performed “Original Face”, which was a more typical alt-rock tune, intermingled with jazzy keys and Latin congas to diversify things a bit before the quirky Zappa-esque breakdown. The band then took the tempo down and the zaniness up a bit for the epic “Bat Country”, which was then followed by one of their most accessible tunes, “Bax, El Gato”, a tune about getting a cat when you’re really more of a dog person. The chorus is one of their most singable and has a real classic feel.

The band then launched into the second big epic of the night, another jazz-funk number called “Cheetah”. The excursion featured exceptionally tight guitar work riding on a wave of punchy horns and included a significant drum breakdown. After a quick take on “Keep On Playing”, the band closed out the set with the fiercely danceable, and thus ironically titled, “Charlie Can’t Dance”. Another fusion of genres spanning from salsa, to funk, to jazz, showing off the band’s eclectic sound and a fitting closer to the set. Liebermonster is a monster of genres, but the kind of monster that you want to keep around at parties, like Sully from Monster’s Inc., but with a more refined audio palette. A breath of fresh jazzy air in the front-range music scene.

Show Notes: This was an opening set for Banshee Tree. Liebermonster opened the show followed by Morsel and then Banshee Tree closed out the evening.

Taper Notes: FOB DFC Mics raised around 8′ PAS. There was an issue with the board feed during the first track and as a result, is AUD only. This also results in the first couple of seconds of track 2 being cut. Thanks to Elliot for the patch!
