Welcome to the GOAT show everybody – Round 2 – FIGHT! Check out Magic Beans‘ second night headlining GOAT Soup and Whiskey Tavern!

“Last night got a little bit crazy” was an example of life imitating art as the band kicked things off for the second night of their two-night headlining-run at The Goat. After the jam-packed first night and the partying that would follow, the set opening “Here On Out” was the perfect homage to the weekend thus far. The crowd who had been partying right alongside the band took the queue and the second night was on. After a cosmic funk jam lead out the opener, the band further delved into funk territory with the jazz-tinged instrumental “Always Cool”. Never forgetting their surroundings, the Beans then launched into their proverbial snow-dance, “Powder”. This rendition featured its own high-tempo electronica jam which slowly evolved into a frenzied outro before transitioning into the deep funktronica melody of the fan-favorite “Mr. Bubbleman”. As the band slowly melted into the groove, the crowd followed and eventually shifted into another feverish outro, directed by a sharp synth attack and whirling guitar lead. After the forays into various electro-funk territories, the band changed things up, going a more traditional blues route with the Casey penned “Sucka Blues”. Another nice change of pace before the set closing “Inventor” which brought the band back to their jamtronica center and proved one of the bigger jams of the evening. An excursion into deep dark jamtronica improv that proved a fitting ride to close out the set.

The second set opened with the beautifully upbeat tones of “Lost & Found”. This tune unlocked itself for another one of the biggest improv moments of the evening, serving up a hefty 17+ minute version to start the final set of the weekend. From here on out, the set got a little bit crazy. The band then covered The Talking Heads’ “Girlfriend Is Better”, a request that came in the wee hours of the morning after the previous’ night of debauchery. The crowd embraced the cover fully, dancing and signing along with every note, leading to the biggest dance-party of the night. Changing up the genre, the band then picked through a quick version of “Hell Ride” which again seemed to be a nod to the previous night’s partying. With a chorus like “I’m gonna die, you’re gonna die, we’re all gonna die someday. Might as well do what you want and say what you want to say” how could you not get caught up in the nihilistic celebration? Next up was the the instrumental odyssey “Underwater Oasis” which true to its name, evokes feelings of drifting underwater. Another well executed bridge between the various genres that comprise the Magic Bean’s original sound. After the song made its landing, the band launched into the set closing “Contraband”, another perfect addition to a show paying tribute to decadence. This is also another Beans tune with a simple yet incredibly fun chorus, something that we can all sing along to. One final dance-tune to end the set.

As the Beans walked off, the crowd chanted for “Jabu” and The Beans were more than happy to oblige as they came out for their final couple of tunes of the weekend. The opener “Jabu Jabu’s Belly” was met with exuberant “Woo’s” as the bass line crept through the PA, satisfying yet another fan request. This set of decadence then ended with what I initially thought would be “Sparkle”. A dude in the crowd had been telling me all night that he was requesting that non-stop. I thought for sure the band was filling that request, but instead I was faked out to hear an even more apt cover, a Colorado traditional, “I’ll Do A Line, You Do A Line”. Upon some googling, a lot of us may remember this as Jeffy’s song, the dancing duck from the “You Just Go Effed in the A” south park episode. But the song Jeffy dances to is actually a reinterpretation of a folk-original popularized by Woody Guthrie called “Crawdad Song”. Not entirely relevant, I just thought that was interesting. A fitting ending to an incredibly fun weekend of music, snowboarding and debauchery.
