When everybody’s trying just to get by…all they want is Magic Beans night 3 at Beanstalk Music Festival!
For their final performance of the weekend, the hosts of Beanstalk put together a set filled with highlights that seemed to draw out the best aspects of the first two nights, sending the crowd off with one final hurrah of a set… and what a hurrah it was.
The set started with “Feed The Beast”, which is the lead single off their most recent release, “Off Leash”. The song’s infectiously catchy synth riff carried it through the main composed parts and then slowly snaked through the rhythm in the form of Duffy’s bass line. The jam was big, managing to go through several evolutions before circling back to the chorus. Next up, the band covered a classic by Buford Abner that most people know as a Sturgil Simpson tune, “Long White Line”. Once again, honorary Magic Bean, Will Trask, sat-in for the entire set, rounding out the band’s slick funk sound with his nuanced percussive attack, paired with Cody Wales’ never-flailing beats and Casey Russell‘s clavinet tone. The funk kept funking on as the band then launched into one of the big highlight segments of the set, starting with the funky Casey tune, “What In The World”, and (after a stirring jam) blending into the party anthem “Here On Out”, which featured another massive jam that peaked several times over a jam peppered with salsa rhythms that featured Nate Werth of Ghost Note on added percussion, as well as Dave Dernovsek from Yak Attack for some insanity on the keys.
The set continued with a true-to-form cover of Grateful Dead‘s “Brown Eyed Women”, followed by the laid-back, sexy-and-soulful slow jam combination of “Nude > Fortune’s Fool”, another selection off this year’s all-killer-no-filler release, “Off Leash”. Just as it seemed the set was about to end, the band had one more tune to add to the hurrah, the largest jam of the weekend, to form in a stellar take on “Mr. Scientist”. From the signature bass riff opener, the audience was ecstatic as the band launched into the crowd favorite. The jam, which was just shy of the 30-minute mark, featured patient builds, drum breakdowns, plenty of peaks, and as Scott Hachey put it, “an ice cold Duff Zone”. The jam is one of the most expansive I have ever heard the Beans perform, and in a weekend filled with more jam highlights than not, this one stands alone. The band then encored with the soulful break-beat “Do Your Thing”, into the comically frank “To Hell We Ride”, which is a strong lesson to anyone on how to treat their time.
Magic Beans stand alone in their ability to craft a sound that manages to find its footing in a scene saturated with imitation. Their blend of funky jamtronica with soulfully melodic songs makes for an engaging experience every single time. Somehow, it’s as classic as it is progressive, all while feeling remarkably fresh. They are the perfect act to host the brilliant three-day festival that they throw so well. All my respect to the Beans for giving us all not only a place to rage a weekend that feels genuine in all respects, but also for providing such an engrossing soundtrack to enjoy it to.
