If you wanna bean me, then you gotta bean me all night long with a recording of Magic Beans at Beanstalk Music Fesitval!


“Give me one last chance and I won’t disappoint you…” was the opening line to “One Last Chance”, the opening tune to the final set of the Magic Beans’ 9th annual Beanstalk Festival. This year’s fest had more tribulations than others, primarily weather related. But the fanbase and the musicians rallied to keep the tradition of this being the most fun moment of the summer, punctuating the festival with the final set by the band that holds the festival namesake. After the bluesy intro, the band segued into their upbeat jamtronica instrumental, “Mission”, a tune that set them on their trajectory for the evening. As the band navigated the composed sections, the crowd bobbed along, fully captivated by the scintillating lead melody, riding the synth tones like a rainbow wave through space, prompting introspection, appreciation, and joy. After a spacious exploration, the band transitioned into the fan-favorite “Bubbleman”, finding room for an even longer improvisational journey, culminating in 40+ minutes of non-stop music to open the set. I certainly was yet to be disappointed.

The band followed up with “Do Your Thing”, one of the stark examples of what sets the Beans’ sound apart from the rest of the pack: their ability to write soulful songs that feel genuine. And that all starts with the skillful writing and smooth vocals of keyboardist, Casey Russell. Almost zero bands in the jam scene can so convincingly switch gears from extended 20-minute+ jamtronica jams, to pure soul. Honestly, it’s probably zero. That’s one of the band’s many secret weapons.

The set continued with “Satan In Satin”, another instrumental dip into the jamtronica well, followed up by the Scott Hachey penned “Footprints”, an accessible folk-grass tune with a reggae dub pre-chorus about reflection, longing, and redemption, which feels like a solid metaphor for the weekend. The band then invited up Cycles guitarist, Patrick Harvey, for a scorching sit-in on the Lowell George tune, “Two Trains”, possibly paying homage to the trains that would occasionally pass through the valley throughout the weekend. The set then closed out with a monster song-sandwich, starting with my personal favorite, “Off Leash”, and extending into the 18-minute mark before segueing into “Lost And Found”, which went the distance once more, prompting an exploratory jam rivaling the “Off Leash” segment almost identically lengthwise, before rounding things out by re-introducing the hook to “Off Leash”.

The encore provided a bit of an unexpected moment when the band covered the new single off of “Sob Rock”, John Mayer’s unreleased (at the time) album. The tune, titled “Last Train”, once again could have been a nod to the trains but may have also just been a nod to the solid outing from the pop-rock sensation and a bit of a tongue-in-cheek cover, due to it being somewhat unexpected. Then again, John Mayer kicks ass, so playing great John Mayer songs shouldn’t seem so far-fetched. Maybe I’m thinking too much about it… They finally closed things out with a mighty take on their original, “Contraband”, which went through various dynamic shifts and iterations, teasing the song’s main hook before taking it on fully to bring it all home.

A Magic Beans show always gets me thinking inwardly, a quality so intangible, it is almost impossible to define. It’s subjective, but the feeling is universal. Some may say its inspiring but that almost feels too spiritual. Some may say it’s just a mix of happiness, sleep deprivation, and a little bit of beer…maybe its all of that. But whatever it is, I’m glad these Beans created Beanstalk.

Taper Notes: Mics setup FOB DFC raised around 7′ PAS. Board feed was split off of the PA sends but does not have the subs mixed in.
