Cornavirus has turned into a bit of a beautiful disaster, but I’ve got a new recording of Mr. Specific performing at Cervantes Other Side flying down ear holes again!
Power-trio Mr. Specific graced the stage of Cervantes’ Other Side last Wednesday night for what would unexpectedly be the last night of music for many, as quarantines go into effect amid the COVID-19 outbreak. The band kicked off a night that was dedicated to GrooveSafe, a movement started to bring awareness to and curb unwanted touching at live events, playing a batch of tunes that was executed with a pin-point attack, bags of riffs, and locked-in grooves.
The show started off with an original, “Cactus”, setting a jogging pace for a set that wouldn’t start its cool down until after the final notes were played. It was then followed with a debut original performance of the comically titled “You Should Floss More”, good hygienic advice, especially relevant now.
The set was constructed primarily with originals but also contained a spattering of covers, many of which paid tribute to the “holiday” (3/11) with fake-outs of “Amber” and “Come Original” as well as a cover of “Beautiful Disaster”, sandwiched in between their original “Pickleless”. Aside from SoCal rockers 311, the band also paid homage to one of their more direct influences, Georgia jamtronica outfit Perpetual Groove, with a cover of “Teakwood Betz” sandwiched in between original “Purple Turtle”. The set then closed with the crunchy “Smile Attack”, a tune that wasn’t originally on the set list but made an appearance as the band was granted extra time to the delight of the crowd.
Mr. Specific laid it all out there in support of a great cause. Their songs are a marriage of constantly evolving melodies, building peaks, and precision, with a myriad of parts that combine into a hypnotizing array of structured musical madness. Their sound is specific, but that’s Mr. Specific to you.
