When all else has been done and said….here comes my recording of Mr. Oysterhead at 1st Bank Center!
Returning from an almost 15-year hiatus, power-trio Oysterhead made a powerful statement on the first night of their two-night-run at the 1st Bank Center, performing two sets comprised of all the tunes off their only album, “The Grand Pecking Order”, and then some. Expectations were all over the board with fans wondering what the band would play or what they may sound like after over a decade since their last performance. Security at the venue claimed the band had been practicing there since Monday and had jam sessions that extended as late as 3am. The crowd waiting to get in had been waiting in line as early as 3pm, many having come from out of state to bear witness to the return of the super group. And return they did.
Oysterhead sounded as great as ever, bringing us back through The Grand Pecking Order with a focused and reinvigorated luster that was thoroughly captivating. The band shifted through a re-worked track list fluidly and seemed to find space to jam at every turn. From the starting duo of “Little Faces” and “Mr. Oysterhead”, each of which contained bulked-up intros and jam segments, to the dark extended jam that started the second set and bled into “Shadow Of A Man”, Oysterhead was not afraid to stretch out their sea legs.
There was something special about seeing Les mosey over to Trey during a stirring solo in his bobbing way, or seeing Stuart toss up his drum sticks during a heated jam or hearing Trey rip lick after lick over Claypool bass slaps. The encore mashed together worlds I didn’t think I’d ever see, such as Trey soloing over a Les Claypool groove during “46 Days”, or Claypool singing a Police tune. Oysterhead isn’t for everyone, but if it’s for you, it’s everything. When all else has been done and said, I’m glad we’ve got more Oysterhead!
