“Happy Hour” is a state of mind…and a new album out from Part & Parcel – sit down and enjoy the celebration from last Saturday at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(Other Side)!
To celebrate the release of their new record, Part & Parcel threw one hell of a shindig at the Other Side, which featured friends galore, songs off the new record “Happy Hour”, new lineups, even NEWER material, and an epic encore to send things off right.
The band kicked off their set with “Fall From Your Feet”, the last track off the new record, which delivered an impassioned vocal performance from vocalist Jacob Moss, as well as highlighted the newest addition to the group, electric guitarist Matt Flaherty, who burst into the outro with a riveting peak-filled solo that not only settled him right in, but immediately added a new layer to the sound altogether. This would carry right over into the next tune, a new song called “Can’t Take”, which was so new that it wasn’t even on the new record; it featured a strong electric lead in the intro, showing the new evolution of the band’s sound and lineup. While the band has had members play electric in the past, Matt’s technical ability and electric-first mindset fits the role better than any part-time member could. It also opens up their potential for exploration, which is another exciting prospect in and of itself. The band also incorporated two Matt Flaherty songs into the set list, featuring “Timmy The Horse” and my personal favorite “Neighborhood”.
For the next tune, the band invited up their recently departed guitarist Brandon Jay to sing and perform “The Port Of Porter”, a song that he wrote for the new record. The moment served as a nice contrast to see the old lineup meet the new, and a great show of respect to Brandon’s contributions to the band and their music.
Afterward, the band invited up Matt Wilkolak on trumpet, Mark Wilkolak on trombone, and Nick Delasaandro on saxophone, which were dubbed The Mercenary Horns and provided a punchy big-band element to the sound that elevated jam segments, such as in “Lost & Found” and “Happy Hour”. They would later contribute to the mega-jam in the encore, as well as providing some Christmas love in “Timmy The Horse”.
The set closed out with a cover of the solemn Nirvana tune, “All Apologies”, which was then paralleled by a celebratory “Harry Hood” jam in the outro. The good vibe would be brought over into the encore as they opened with a cover of the Allen Toussaint classic “On Your Way Down”, which featured another sit-in from former member Brandon Jay, this time on fiddle. The cover is a staple of the band’s live catalog and with the added benefit of an electric guitar, fiddle, and bizarre father/son discussion regarding the wall and space force, this version stands alone as one of the most eclectic to date. The band then invited The Mercenary Horns back up along with Danny and Mikey from Amoramora for a duo of covers, Buddy Guy’s “Man Of Many Words” and the purple one’s “1999”. Exploratory and celebratory, both were musical highlights of the evening and ended things with an appropriate gusto. Congrats to Part & Parcel on the new album!
