Welcome this is a recording of Phish at The Grand at Moon Palace Cancun, alas, the final day!
After an unforgettable weekend, in the blink of an eye, we come to the final night of Phish’s inaugural run at Cancun’s Moon Palace resort. The band seemed in good spirits the final night, and by “Breath Of Burning”, the lyrics “And what does it matter that the end’s in sight? We’re not going gently, we’re gonna rage with Page at the dying of the light”, seemed all that much more relevant.
The final day started a couple hours earlier than the previous nights, so the first set was performed in full daylight, which was unique to all the other nights’ performances. This led to some comical banter prior to “Divided Sky” that prompted Trey to say “Man you guys are so lit up, now we know what you look like… Normally we feel like we’re four mediocre looking guys up here, and you’re all stunning model-looking people out there, but now the secret is out. It’s kind of like a whole beach full of mediocre looking people” — a line I’m sure will make itself onto a t-shirt. “Divided Sky” contained a particularly unique moment, as Trey broke the mythic silence during the middle of the song to quip about the moment and how beautiful it was. Stating “This is fucking unbelievable? I mean come on, seriously?!”, clearly caught up in the moment. The following banter gave some insight into the inner-workings of the band, as Fishman ripped on Trey’s apology to the crowd for making fun of their looks. Clearly the band was enjoying themselves as much as the crowd.
The show featured a few highlight jams, including an expanded “Everything’s Right” in the first set, which would be the longest vehicle of the evening; an enticing microjam in “David Bowie”; a massive 30+ minute “Simple > Golden Age” combination to start the second set (possibly a lyrical nod to “The Grand” section of The Moon Palace); and even a slick transition between “Undermind” and “Back On The Train”. Throughout the weekend, the band’s playing never faltered as they navigated jams with a conscious touch, and flowed their sets with equal resolve, keeping fans enraptured with huge bust outs, mindful improvisational moments, and set lists that captured the moment in more ways than one.
The encore had the markings of a band not ready to leave paradise, as the band played seven tunes to put the finishing touches on the run — well 6 1/2 if you don’t really count “The Horse”. This included the oft-neglected “Fee”, an out-of-left-field rocking version of “Funky Bitch”, and the new “love and light” ethos of “More” to cap things off.
The final day of Mexico was bittersweet. The experience of Phish Mexico is unparalleled, enjoying not just your favorite band, not just your friends, not just paradise, but all of those together… it’s an incredibly transcendent experience that will be a highlight of my Phish adventures for many years to come. Trey put it best at the end of his banter during the “Divided Sky” broken-silence break, “This is the best thing ever.” I couldn’t agree more.
