Phranklin’s Tower | 2018-03-20 | Quixote’s True Blue, Denver, CO [SBD/AUD Matrix]

It’s #TaperThursday which means you get a nice helping of #FreeMusic! Today’s menu features Phranklins Tower on their Tuesday night residency at Quixote’s True Blue!

Blending two of the most prolific jambands of all time, Phranklin’s Tower provided just seconds short of 3 hours worth of Grateful Dead / Phish tunes to fill the newly minted Quixote’s with the music that inspired it. The band did a great job of deciding which songs transitioned into each other, nailing most segues senselessly. The transition from “Funky Bitch” into “Casey Jones” and then “Crazy Fingers” into “Roggae” was fluid and added an anxious anticipation at the end of each jam. I would find myself thinking what key they were in and what the next song could be as a result. Kudos to Gil Layton who did one of the most impressive Bob Weir impressions I’ve ever heard for a spectacular “The Music Never Stopped” which was definitely a highlight of the evening. Also check out the jams in “Sand”, “Roggae” and the encore “Dear Prudence” the latter of which took on a reggae spin that neither the Dead nor Phish ever did but I found welcome. The encore itself is its own highlight and almost it’s own set clocking in at almost 40 minutes and features a moving rendition of the Brent Mydland penned “I Will Take You Home”. A fantastic night of music in a venue trying something a bit different by starting music earlier. If you’re like me and can’t make week night shows because of the late start times, Phranklins Tower Tuesday nights at Quixote’s True Blue is the spot! Grateful Dead / Phish music played by some of Denver’s finest musicians, all done before 11:30? I’m in.
