Howzabout some more #FreeMusic before 2017 is over? Check out my pull from Sound Travels opening things up at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(The Otherside)!
Starting off the band played “The Dessert Song” which had a hooky riff placed over twangy guitars and rapsy vocals. Lyrically it was a song about perspective and enjoying the moment. It eventually found itself in a ethereal type jam space with enveloped guitars and synthed out bass tones. The band’s sound is a blend of southern and blues rock with Weir/Bell-style vocals. I really loved the riff in “The After Time”, a whirling melody that framed each verse in a manic but catchy rhythm. “Leslie Yeeboo” was americana/prog-rock epic that shifted through several segments before once again launching into another spacey improv journey that patiently built itself up several times before erupting into the final boisterous outro of “Free and wild; wild and free”. Next up was the second epic of the evening “The Truth” which had a much dark vibe than any of the earlier tunes and had a drifting guitar solo over a funky 80s style jam which sounded a lot like “Eminence Front” at least in tempo. After a slower number about the singer’s daughter “Ruby” there were two nods to the jam-gods Phish in a segue into “Tweezer Reprise” and then a Phish coveirng Ween cover of “Roses Are Free”. The set ended with a prog-ish type song “Rocks And Stones” which contained a mini-jam of its own before launching into the exhaultive and somewhat macabre “Nothing like a taste of my own blood to know that I’m still alive”. Great set to start things off – glad I came early and caught these guys. Definitely hit them up next time they’re around!
Sound Travels | 2017-12-22 | Cervantes’ Other Side, Denver, CO
One Set: The Dessert Song > Great Escape, The After Time, Leslie Yeeboo, The Truth, Ruby > Tweezer Reprise (Phish), Roses Are Free (Ween), Rocks And Stones
Show Notes: This was an opening spot for Disco Floyd. Sound Travels opened the show, followed by Phour Point O and then Disco Floyd.
Taper Notes: Setup next to to the soundboard on the stage right side. Mics raised around 9′ PAS. There was an issue, possibly a bad connection, with the right channel in the AUD stereo feed which caused intermittent crackling throughout the entire set so I ended up only using the left channel and panning it to center, so its only a Mono feed for the AUD channel. Thanks to FOH engineer Shrink for the board patch!
Thank you to Sound Travels, FOH Shrink (thanks for the board patch!) and Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom for being so cool with taping/sharing shows. Go see live music and tip your bartender! #spacetapes
