Marty what you got in that bag? Heed this…It’s Aqueous crushing the Main Stage at Beanstalk Music Festival!
Sandwiched in-between performances Electric Forest, Aqueous made the trek to the Colorado valley to perform a face-melting set filled with big jams, an unexpected cover and plenty of fan favorites. Things opened up with the crunchy funk-metal tune “Origami”. The song has a natural swing that immediately sparked the crowd which was beginning to feel the temperature dip as the sun went down. The thrashy outro helped serve the fans and the band as they stretched their legs out and eased into set. Next-up was one of the major highlights of the set, a 20+ minute “Weight Of The World” that journeys through several spacey themes before laying into a jam dripping with synth low end, shredding guitar peaks and perfectly accented drumming. After a solid performance of the infectiously catchy “Marty” came the epic inspired by underpass graffiti art, “Willy Is 40”. The tune exhibits where Aqueous’ songwriting truly shines; injecting what feels like 10 different personalities into the structure of a song. The second you think something is funk, its metal. The second you think its rock, its reggae. It’s a trip, and by the end of the jam I felt like I had lived 5 different songs and they all rocked. What came next was probably the most unexpected part of the set for me, a cover of Elton John’s “Bennie And The Jets”. The cover was executed well without straying much from the original structure however the end flirted with a spaced out bliss jam briefly before exploding (pun intended) into “Kitty Chaster (Explosions In The Sky)” which was the second jam highlight of the set. The band explored the tune thoroughly, once again incorporating a heavy synth element into the improvisational segments. As the song came to a close, the band though they were out of time but after discovering they had 10 minutes left, launched into the crowd pleasing “Warren In The Window”. Once again, brilliantly executed and a purposeful closing statement on an already brilliant set.
