lespecial is like a secret sauce you just can’t quite pin down. Never have I seen a band so successfully blend thrashy metal guitar tones and deep dub beats. One moment you want to head bang and air-guitar each riff, the next you want to stanky leg to the filthy bass drop. The sound never feels contrived, if anything, it begs the question how this connection has never been heavily espoused before. It’s definitely a light touch but one that can shift the entire paradigm of a song, keeping the sets interesting and fresh. Songs like the opener “Pentachronic” and “Sound That We Do” show a penchant for pop-sensibilities within their songwriting that makes their music extremely accessible on a level very seldom achieved in the jam world. I honestly think lespecial could hold their own at an EDM fest as easily as they could a jam fest and each crowd would be getting something they don’t usually see. Their sound eclipses conventional norms and provided quite the throw-down for the sun-baked Rancho Del Rio afternoon. Always a sucker for a fun cover, I really dug the band’s somewhat brief take on Cardi B.’s “Bodak Yellow” which then segued into Kendrick Llamar’s “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe”. The set closing “Enter Sandstorm” is a true testament to the band’s versatility and ability to seamlessly bond dance and metal soundscapes, pushing the envelope on what the scene can offer and having a damn good time doing it.
