The Elegant Plums | 2018-01-26 | Cervantes’ Other Side, Denver, CO [SBD/AUD Matrix]

You know what I love more than Friday? #FreeMusicFriday! Check out my pull of The Elegant Plums opening things up at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(The Other Side)!

The Elegant Plums have an interesting blend of reggae, ska-punk, jam rock that you’d think hails straight from Southern California rather than their hometown of Denver, Colorado. The set was an upbeat rager that constantly hit the crowd with hook after hook. The band certainly has an ear for writing melodic songs and compositions that bring forth their unique sound. Songs like “Bad Habit” and “Amamos” show that sound off with surfy rockers that still find room for compact jams. Songs like “Medicine” gives us a sense of the band’s range with a slowed down groove with a super catchy and well written chorus. Near the end of the set, for the Al Green classic “Take Me To The River” and a debut performance of a new original “Dunky Fay”, the band invited up “The Pits” which consisted of Nina Machado and Whitney Carmichael on vocals. They brought a fantastic vocal chorus to both songs and got the crowd further engaged into each performance. The set closed out with an original that was a bit different from anything else they’d played, a more jamtronica oriented tune that once again showed off range and a melodic ear for original compositions. The outro jam had a fantastic solo coupled with a humorous and apropriate sample from the show “Eastbound and Down” about plums. By the end of the set, The Other Side was as full as I’d ever seen it for an opening band. The band certainly had a few friends and family in the crowd but since it was a dual-venue show, it was clear a ton of the people in the main ballroom came to see what was up. A true testament to the band’s ability to rouse a crowd with solid playing and and songwriting.
