#TaperTuesday continues with more #FreeMusic – Enjoy my pull from The SWAT Team headlining night 1 of their run at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom (The Other Side)!
The funk was with The Other Side for night one of The SWAT Team. This super group fronted by talk-box virtuoso Steve Swatkins takes members from three of the funkiest bands in the scene and delivers a dance party that had The Other Side packed to the brim with funky people looking to get down. Steve Swatkins couldn‘t have put together a better lineup of funk all-stars to pay tribute to the legends before them. When the backbone to your rhythm section starts with Adam Deitch, you know you’re in good hands. Follow it up with the funky keys and bass of The Motet’s Joey Porter and Garrett Sayers; all framed by the guitar work of Kyle Hollingsworth Band’s Dan Schwindt – Steve Swatkins certainly outfitted The SWAT Team with all the big guns.
As if the core master class of funk musicians wasn’t enough, the band treated fans to some stellar sit-ins. Kim Dawson from Pimps of Joytime loaned her incredible vocal abilities to several songs, including a fierce rendition of Betty Davis’ “If I’m In Luck I Might Just Get Picked Up”. Jaden Carlson (who opened the show with her band Jaden Carlson Band) sat-in during the Rufus/Chaka Khan tune “You Got The Love” and ripped possibly the best solo of the night leaving the crowd with their jaws on the floor. Lyle Divinsky also joined his Motet band mates for the last half off the show and if you’ve never heard this guy sing…you’re in for a real treat.
If you like bootyshaking funk, all star sit-ins and more talk-box solos than you can shake a funk stick at, then you’re going to love every last bit of The SWAT Team. Great song selection and stellar performers putting on one funktastic evening.

Show Notes: This was the first night of a two-night headlining-run at Cervantes: The Other Side. Jaden Carlson Band opened the show followed by Watermelon Funk.
[1] “If I’m In Luck I Might Just Get Picked Up” and “Can’t Stand The Rain” featured Kim Dawson (Pimps Of Joytime) on vocals.
[2] “You Got The Love” featured Kim Dawson (Pimps Of Joytime) on vocals and Jaden Carlson (Jaden Carlson Band) on guitar.
[3] “What Have You Done For Me Lately?”, “Can’t Hide Love”, “Love Slip Upon Ya” and “When I’m Kissing My Love” featured Lyle Divinsky (The Motet) on vocals.
[4] “Serpentine Fire” featured Kim Dawson (Pimps Of Joytime) and Lyle Divinsky (The Motet) on vocals.
Taper Notes: Stage right of the soundboard. Slightly off-center, Mics raised around 9′. Vocal mics were running a bit hot and there is some distortion on some of the later “louder” vocal songs but nothing too major. Reduced bass and EQ’d AUD feed to reduce mud. Thanks to Jason for the patch!
Thank you to The SWAT Team, Steveland Swatkins and Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom for being cool with taping/sharing shows. Go see live music and tip your bartenders! #spacetapes
