Time floats along like an arrow, and sometimes it brings us recordings of Trusetto live at Lost Lake!
While late-January Denver isn’t exactly the warmest of climates, those who were lucky enough to get into sold-out Lost Lake could have heated the city based on body warmth alone, as Denver’s premier two-flute-experience (my new favorite descriptor for any band), Trusetto, packed the Colfax venue until it was absolutely bursting at the seems with fans ready to get down to their unique funk stylings.
Trusetto kicked things off with the tune “Goblins”, a fun jaunt that highlighted each member’s individual contributions to the band’s hip blend of funk and pop. Next up, the band performed “Mirrors”, which carried a more suave type of vibe, punctuated by a slick guitar melody and enveloped by flute harmonies that rounded out the song’s baroque pop personality. It also brought forward one of Trusetto’s big strengths: their dueling flutes – the band’s north star that guided them throughout the night, commandeering the path for the melody and lead moments with a dulcet confidence that is not often seen in funk music, elevating their sound to something that can transcend the genre in a creative way.
Things were then slowed down for the more soulful “I Got You”, a romantic number led by the sultry vocals and saxophone work. The song also opened itself up for more lead moments from the flutes as well as the keys. This theme was a common throughout the night, as Trusetto never missed an opportunity to showcase their impressive instrumentation arsenal, for example, in the guitar work of “Stained Glass Eyes”, the trumpet lines of “New Found Love”, or the percussion in the band’s single “Babylon”. What’s equally impressive is that, as robust as they are (the band has nine members), every artist is able to find their voice and contribute methodically without overpowering any particular dynamic or emotion, while promoting each layer with a tacit and intrinsic nature that only comes with open musical communication and experience.
Trusetto is by no means your typical funk band – they’re the size of a ska band and take leads like a jazz band, yet they serve up the melodic sensibilities of a pop band, bundling all of it into a soul-funk package that is accessible and just plain fun. They have a dynamic ability to rouse a crowd during high energy songs and keep them engaged in the more relaxed moments, all while providing original material that people can dance to. Fundamentally, you can’t get much better than that.
