I got the answers…I got the key…I got Yak Attack performing their first of two sets at Beanstalk Music Festival!
Yak Attack is the perfect fire starter for any party. Their music hits with the ferocity of club bangers, nuanced with musicality spanning all sorts of genres from funk, to rock, to EDM. Their first set of two at Beanstalk kicked off with a string of tunes that exhibited their attention to detail in both crafting interesting set lists, while flowing their show with an improvisational flair. The opening combination of “Pump And Dump > 8th Wonder > Stranger Things > 8th Wonder > Pump And Dump” was a palindrome of upbeat grooves that navigated a sea of undulating melodies and dynamic lead work, driven by the mind-boggling fingers of Dave Dernovsek and never-flailing rhythm work of bassist Rowan Cobb and drummer Nick Werth.
After the intense song-sandwich to open the show, the band invited up some friends to help out with a couple of tunes. The first was “Singin'”, which featured Portland-based singer Aniana on vocals. As a mostly instrumental band, it was cool to see the band add a new element to their sound with the passionate vocal performance from Aniana. Next up, the band invited up Magic Beans keyboardist Casey Russell for a take on a brand new tune called “Bacaw”. While the tune was completely new to Casey, he handled it like a pro, laying down plenty of funky Nord-work to add his mark on the song.
The set then closed with a combo of Yak Attack classics. The first was “Nephalem”, which the band originally thought would close out the set. Lucky for us, they were allotted an extra 15 minutes, which they used appropriately, closing out their set with a 13+ minute version of “Ahimsa” that ended up being the most extensive jam of their set.
Yak Attack’s music explores the deepest crevices of EDM and presents a product that is as accessible as it is true to form. Their sound is a proverbial chameleon, adapting to the moment, painting a soundscape that keeps listeners engaged and at the mercy of the band’s next drop. Whether a mid-day set or a late-night throw-down, Yak Attack is always the right choice to keep the party going.
