It’s gonna be, like they say, the greatest day when you get a recording of Zeta June opening things up at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom!
To kick off the party for the innovative Cycles Interactive Game Show Experience, Denver’s jamtronica outfit, Zeta June, brought their blend of progressive rock sensibilities, electronica rhythms, and even some pop-nuance to start everyone’s night off in the greatest way (that’s a Zeta June pun).
The opener, “Nightmare”, was prefaced by the sound of an ominous storm before the band kicked into the high energy tune. The band was patient with their builds and precise with their releases, tactfully landing in-and-out of composed transitions and showcasing a tight playing style that resonated well with the crowd that was eager to start the night. Tunes like “Greatest Day” and “Naked Eye” exhibited the band’s ability to write soulful ballads that hearken back to late 70s disco anthems. The majority of the set, however, was composed of instrumentals that really allowed the band to stretch their most used jamtronica muscles. Songs like “The Outsider” and “Sky Walker”, which adhere to more classic jamtronica tropes, were executed effectively and with a bit more of a progressive rock swagger. Their songs find their own voice with an aggressive prog-riff attack that’s melded with the atmospheric builds, downtempo jams, and even some funk. The band’s cover selection also shows how far the jamtronica evolution has come, as a band like Zeta June is able to comfortably cover Alan Parsons and the Grateful Dead in a set that contained such strong elements of electronica. Their set-closing take on The Grateful Dead’s “Deal” was an especially fun moment for crowd members, who were electric with anticipation for what they would all experience.
Zeta June‘s set advantageously presented the band as a progressive jamtronica act that can shape and mold their sound to fit their tastes, while still keeping an original feel and compelling jam style. Their set opened the night, setting the tone beautifully with a performance that captivated the audience and kept them engaged from the stormy beginnings to the joyous celebratory completion.

Slight crackling/distortion during “Sky Walker” gets fixed around the 20 minute mark but is in both the board and the audience mix. Board patch and mix thanks to FOH Engineer Cory Ballentine.
