It’s #FreeMusicFriday…Peep this steeno, The Jauntee live at Beanstalk Music and Mountains Festival 2018!

When your day starts with The Jauntee, you’re in a good spot. Opening up the first full day of music at Beanstalk, The Jauntee brought their intelligent songwriting, superb jamming skills and brand spankin’ new guitar to wow the mid-day crowd. Starting things off, the band eased the crowd in with the deceptively reggae-vibed “Peepin’ Steeno”. The first half of the tune is a nonchalant island jaunt that eventually morphed into a feverish outro as the band flexed their sound a bit against the breezy Rancho air. They then segued into “Jelly Time” to close out the segment.

Next up was the always fun and accessible “Colorado” which was a crowd pleaser, especially considering the beautiful setting easily making its case. The song felt more poignant than usual as the band was performing their first year at the mostly locally influenced festival. The band then launched into the title track from my favorite Neil Young record, “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”. There wasn’t a huge jam but Caton Sollenberger certainly took the new axe for a spin, weaving a fiery solo into the end of the tune.

Afterwards, the band launched into the unquestionable jam of the set, raging a 20+ minute “Renaissance Man” and setting the bar for any future improvisational moments the rest of the day would have in store. The segment showcases The Jauntee at their absolute best; exploring their original music in a voice that is very much their own. Their jams have a recognizable personality that is often lacking from most improvisational moments in acts that sometimes get too comfortable trying to be something other than themselves. The band was riding this wave hard as the following song “Old Thomspon” also found time to expand and break itself down as the band meticulously weaved in new layers to each phrase.

The musicality only continued through the set as the band showed off more of their chops in the final three-song-segment. “When The Love Is” especially showed off some spectacularly Jauntee locked-in tonal moments. Somewhere between a guitar bend, an organ wail, drum roll and a tight thump lies the Jauntee’s sound. It gets into your head and makes you curious to hear more. The set closing “Puppy In My Pocket” speaks to this ear-worm ability The Jauntee have…”that I keep on in…” – that moment, if you love melody, will sit with you for weeks. Then once the riff hits…steeno help you. After this set at Beanstalk I could only think, the jam scene is lucky to have the Jauntee but Colorado is even luckier.
