Cycles | 2018-06-28 | Beanstalk Music & Mountains Festival at Rancho Del Rio, Bond, CO [SBD/AUD Matrix]

It’s the #TaperThursday after Beanstalk Music Festival 2018 – get comfortable ’cause it’s about that time…check out my pull from Cycles‘ first set of the weekend!

While the fest technically started two bands earlier, Cycles was the first act I was able to setup and get plugged in for. Needless to say, I was more than ready to get my festival weekend started and thankfully, Cycles obliged me with a set highlighted with a couple of jams and a couple of sit-ins.

The band started things off with “Something In The Water” which has proven itself a decent launching pad as both a set opener and a jam starter. This version contained a brief big sky build and an equally quick drum and bass breakdown before fading back into the misty reverb in the outro. The following tune was a treat for all the Ween fans as the band covered the boognish’s ode to mutation, “Transdermal Celebration”. Their sound fit perfectly with the song and made me start to reconsider what band’s I use to compare Cycles’ sound to. After a relatively straight forward “It’s About That Time”, the band invited up Casey Russell (Magic Beans) for “The Mess” and his staple sit-in, “Chapanga” – the latter which also featured Will Trask on percussion. As can be expected, Casey and Will’s playing complimented the sound astutely and helped elevate both tunes both in structure and in their improvisational moments. After a solid take on “Mean Dog”, we experienced another sit-in of epic proportions as Patrick invited up Dopapod / Octave Cat keyboardist Eli Winderman for an incredible rendition of “Get Up Out Of Your Head”. The jam has a deep pocket groove, led by Michael Wood’s poignant playing and catapulted by a blistering Patrick solo. My only complaint is that I wish it could have gone on another 20 minutes. After a fairly direct version of “The Aloe Parade” the band closed out with their signature Les Claypool cover “One Better”. The band gave one final push during the outro jam as they broke down the tune into an absolute shred fest. Not a bad way to start the best weekend of the summer.
