Yeah bomb cyclones are cool and all, but how about some bomb new music from Amoramora at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(Other Side)?!

Sandwiched in between the classiness of Envy Alo and the grassiness of Part & Parcel, Boulder’s own Amoramora brought the rock to the Part and Parcel album release musical potluck. Outfitted with an arsenal of new songs, Amoramora laid down a set that begins to plot the next phases in their musical development.

The band kicked off their set with the upbeat “Diamond Phillips”, which is not a new song, but is newer and has proved its utility, both as a set opener, set closer and jam vehicle, quickly cementing its position in the band’s live catalog. After a quick tribute to the hard workers at Dunder Mifflin paper, the band played what would be the first of three debut originals in a row. The first tune, “Ghost Dance”, is an infectiously hooky tune that toes the line between surf punk and alternative rock in a way that made me re-focus the lens in which I see Amoramora. The song is an evolution in their songwriting that is refreshingly pure and compelling, inspired by both the old and new, and it even features a more a-typical jam section that shows promise for potential exploration. This song is Amoramora in a way I never thought of before, and I laud their ability to grow as songwriters. The next new tune, “Bag & A Bottle”, had a bayou-blues vibe with a celebratory chorus that I could see being sung around a campfire or in a dimly lit bar. The third new tune had an anthemic intro that drove the narrative of the entire song by both being the introduction and the peak. It also made way for a ferocious solo from Danny. The new tunes all were well-crafted submissions to the repertoire and exhibited several new stylistic elements to the band’s sound.

The band then performed a solid sequence that started with “Dreaming” and eventually segued into the El Ten Eleven tune “My Only Swerving”, an instrumental that crept into the soundscape with a dreamlike quality, temporarily hushing the crowd. The next segment showcased two more newer songs, “22 Tattoos > Owl Eyes”. Both of which further endear this new writing style and help shape their place in the band’s evolving style.

Next up was one of the highlights of the evening, a trip through “Bloom -> Ultimate Entropy -> The Mollusk” that ramped up the zaniness from the easy going canter of “Bloom” to the frantic and dark introduction of “Ultimate Entropy”, through its solemn lyrics and into the pure-brown style of Ween, the segment was a en epic journey through sonic textures and polarizing lyrical themes. The set then closed out with “Little Spoon”, which featured a “96 Quite Bitter Beings” jam at the end, a jam you may recognize as the soundtrack to the boys from Jackass wiping out on shopping carts. Fitting for a song about drinking whiskey and asking someone to be your “little spoon” who spreads their love around like “butter around the neighborhood”, the ending will certainly likely be painful. Kudos to Amoramora for the new music – excited to see where the future takes their sound.
