Leave a little space just in case you got a space tape of Amoramora headlining Your Mom’s House!
As the seasons change, so do the days of our lives and, as a result, the lineups of our bands. Rocking a brand spanking new lineup that has shuffled all members except front-man, Danny Evans, Amoramora made their headlining return to Denver’s Your Mom’s House with two sets filled with jams, some new covers, and a new interpretation on the old sound.
The show kicked off with one of the bigger jams of the evening as the band started their first set with the original “Chemical Homebrew”. The jam took contributions from all new members and was a good way to show-off the new lineup through the lens of a fan-favorite. The band then launched into a mighty grouping of songs as they traversed “22 Tattoos > Oh Brother > Pizza Mike”, before then capping the segment off with a shockingly well-executed cover of Erykak Badu’s “Tyrone”, complete with electro drum samples and sultry keys work. After a bouncy take on “Window To The Stars”, the band paid tribute to two of our fallen brothers in music, Grateful Dead lyricist, Robert Hunter, and Circles Around The Sun guitarist, Neal Cassal. The tribute took form in a cover of Circles Around The Sun’s “On My Mind”, which segued into The Grateful Dead’s preeminent summer song “Sunshine Daydream”. A fitting nod to the legends we lost this year. The set then closed on a much brighter note with the salsa-tinged “Siesta” to close out the first set.
The second set opened up with the biggest jam of the evening as the band took a tried-and-true jam-vehicle, “Diamond Phillips”, for a spin. The jam showed off the new members’ abilities to communicate with each other through layers of sonic musicianship. Keyboardist Mitch Frank especially excelled during this number, laying down the dynamic backdrop for the rest of the band’s exploration. The band then took on one of my favorite newer tunes of theirs, the reflective “Owl Eyes”. Afterwards, the set was rounded out with fan favorites: First, one of the band’s most well-known pairings, “Rafiki’s Expedition > Spirit Of Adventure”, brought a whole new layer of funk to the experience, especially the “Spirit Of Adventure”, which featured another one of the bigger jams of the evening. The band then performed my personal favorite tune, “Hooper’s Hotel”, which is now notably missing the horn section and has been supplemented with some keys work, but it still features Danny’s shreddy guitar work. The show then closed out with a semi-jammed version of “Little Spoon”, giving one final hurrah before ending things ’til next time.
Amoramora’s new lineup provides a cast that feels a natural fit to both Danny’s songwriting and jam style. It still feels like Amoramora, and that’s a great thing. But where things change are in the band’s ability to craft dynamic soundscapes during their jams, shifting movements with a natural suave that at times feels even more characteristic of the band’s sound. To steal a line from Trey Anastasio, “It’s love, it’s love and it always was”. I think we can all get excited over where this one goes.
