I’m just alone in my own world…but at least I’ve got DIZGO performing at Beanstalk Music Festival, which is nice!

With the second day of Beanstalk upon us, there was a new guard holding down The Look Out Stage: Indiana-based jamtronica outfit DIZGO. The band was so excited to get started, they treated fans to an unannounced set that featured a cover of one of my favorite Beck tunes, “Debra”. Sadly, that set fell victim to the spontaneity of the moment and didn’t get properly recorded. Luckily, the other four were!

The band’s tweener sets featured a solid mix of originals pulsating with punchy electronic grooves and intermingled with dynamic guitar tones that spanned from crushing to funky. Their music’s danceability blended with the intimate setting of the Look Out Stage, giving each set a house-party energy that felt contagious. The band’s cover selection was on point as well, showing off an eclectic mix of tastes comprised of Beck, Daft Punk, Black Sabbath, and Pink Floyd, just to name a few. They even managed to play a rendition of Phish’s “Birds Of A Feather” that stayed astutely authentic up until the jam, which took on a more contorted jamtronica element before breaking back into the main refrain, all while feeling surprisingly natural.

DIZGO‘s music is like dub-Daft Punk on a jamtronica acid trip. Like disco if it was drunk (which coincidentally is how I like to imagine they got their name). Their penchant for melodic songwriting, revolving around dance party tempos and guitar riffs that ping-pong from heavy to funky, make up a roller-coaster sound that is a thrilling ride to be on from start-to-finish. The perfect four-part-after-party to anyone looking to keep the music going in between the main stages.

Show Notes: These sets were performed on the Lookout Stage at the seventh annual Beanstalk Music & Mountains Festival. These were 30 minute tweener sets in between the Main Stage acts.
[1] “Through The Right Place” contained quotes & teases from “Brick House” (The Commodores).
[2] “Dreams” contained a “Birds Of A Feather” (Phish) tease.

Taper Notes: Behind the board, slightly off-center. Mic stand was set on a bar counter, they were raised around 6′ DIN configuration. The band’s first set was not scheduled and unfortunately was not fully recorded. What was recorded had several level issues so I omitted it from this fileset. There was an instrument that caused a noticeable distortion problem during “Cool Blue Mellow” and again (worse) during “Dreams” but doesn’t last too long. Thanks to FOH engineer Ed Myszkier for the board patch and mix!

Thank you to DIZGO and Beanstalk Music Festival for being cool with taping/sharing live music. Go see live music and support your local artists! #spacetapes
