The first night of the annual Central City Jazz Festival featured an evening in the Grand Z Casino capped off with a funked-out set from all-stars of funk, Dumpstaphunk! Big horns, rousing organ wails, and fat funk rhythms filled the casino floor as fans arriving to the festival were treated to a set from the New Orleans jamfunk veterans. Highlights included the punchy opener “I Wish You Would”, which featured a tenaciously locked-in rhythm section framing an impressive batch of horn solos; Ivan Neville’s steadfast keys work in “Gasman” and “Do You”, which lead the group through the song’s uptempo rhyhtm and jam section with a swift-handed ease; the incredibly tight cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “Superfly” that felt like the funkiest thing they’d play all night until the set closer, “Dancin’ To The Truth”, which sent the band and fans off proper. At every turn of the set, it felt as if the band knew exactly what the crowd needed and was more than happy to deliver.
Dumpstaphunk is the perfect band for a late-night party in a casino. They’ll keep you going, and when they’re done, you’ll want more. Their energy is unparalleled, and it translates into an indelibly passionate approach to funk, both in their musicianship and overall attack. Dumpstaphunk is the real deal.
