Come closer now baby, don’t be afraid…I’ve got a wild Envy Alo recording from Beanstalk Music Festival!
Jam music is all about improvising, so when Formula 5 was unable to attend this year’s Beanstalk Music Festival, Envy Alo was happy to step in–minus guitarist Kevin Hinder, who had a previous engagement that prevented him from playing the show. Still, the show must go on, and as a result, Envy Alo invited some others up to the stage to help fill in for their missing guitarist. The result was four sets packed with highlights featuring several of the Beanstalk artists performing that day.
The sets were tweeners, so the band had around 30 minutes in between each of the main stage acts to keep the party going for attendees. Their first set was the closest to a standard Envy Alo show as one can get without Kevin. The band opened things up with their fierce original, “Once”. It featured both “Prom King” and “Prom Queen”, the former bookending a cover of Joe Cocker’s “Feelin’ Alright?”, and the latter slinking out of the hopeful original “Trust”.
The second set featured a sit-in by Patrick Harvey from Cycles, starting with a pair of covers. The first was a take on Phish’s “Back On The Train”, which was a fitting choice for the guitarist who is also a huge Phish phan, followed by a rousing rendition of Al Green’s soulful “Take Me To The River”. With his amp cranked to 11, Patrick led each tune with incendiary lead work. The set then closed with the sultry original, “Tigress”.
The third set started off with the majority of Kessel Run lending their talents to a take on the diso-lounge tune “Disco Yes” and the Bill Withers classic “When I’m Kissing My Love”. They then invited up the newest member of Part & Parcel, Matt Flahery, to play guitar on “That’s What Love Will Make You Do”, which also featured the coolest looking member of Magic Beans, Cody Wales, on drums. Matt then stayed on board for the next tune, an Envy Alo original called “Either Day”, which also featured Casey Russel from the Magic Beans on keys. Suffice to say, Envy Alo has plenty of friends to call on when in a bind. The third set then closed out with a spacey, jammed-out version of “Don’t Wanna Wait”, which featured a stirring performance from Kevin Supina on the saxophone, utilizing an effect that turned his saxophone into whirling synth.
The fourth and final set started with a jammy version of the original “Ship It”. The band then invited up Cameron Canepa from Kessel Run to fill in the guitar role for the remainder of the set, which also featured a sit-in with fellow Kessel Runner, Alex Cazet, for the final tune, a funky cover on Jamirquoi’s “Cosmic Girl”.
It can’t be easy to be missing such an integral part of your sound and a founding member of your band, but Envy Alo made lemonade with their lemons and seemingly made enough to serve everyone for four sets. Their sets were filled with high-energy, bountiful sit-ins, and a well-curated set list of original and cover material to provide the perfect interludes for the main stage breaks.

Show Notes: These sets were performed on the Lookout Stage at the seventh annual Beanstalk Music & Mountains Festival. These were 30 minute tweener sets in between the Main Stage acts. Envy Alo was filling in for Formula 5 who was unable to attend the festival. As a result, original guitarist Kevin Hinder had a previously scheduled show with his other band Kind Hearted Strangers and was unable to attend. This resulted in several sit-ins from other bands.

Taper Notes: Behind the board, far stage-left, off-center. Mic stand was set on a bar counter, they were raised around 6′ DIN configuration. Kevin Supina’s sax is a bit low in the mix so I tried to compensate with the audience feed. Patrick’s guitar was a bit high during the second set and clipped a few times which I fixed in post but nothing that is too noticeable. Thanks to FOH engineer Ed Myszkier for the board patch and mix!
Thank you to Envy Alo and Beanstalk Music Festival for being cool with taping/sharing shows. Go see live music and support your local artists! #spacetapes
