Wake up kids – we got the recording of Envy Alo performing at Cervantes’ Other Side!
Coming off an eventful summer that included a formative appearance at Beanstalk Music Festival, as well as shows at The Boulder Hatch Shell and the Levitt Pavilion, Envy Alo chose to close out the summer in a big way, with a headlining show at Cervantes’ Other Side to celebrate their new record, “The Ranch”. If that wasn’t big enough, the band invited Chuck Morris from Lotus to add extra percussion for the entire set, allowing fans to see an iteration of Envy Alo never seen before.
If there was any doubt about Envy Alo’s ability to headline a full night of music, those fears were put to rest as the band put on a spirited two-hour+ marathon set of mostly original material, performing almost the entire new album, minus the second track, “Treats”. The band kicked the show off with the first track off the new record, “God Don’t Make No Junk”, a fierce instrumental with a one-two cadence that feels like a boxer juking and weaving through the composition. The song also exhibits the band’s dynamic songwriting, as the tune rests itself into its mid-section, which is a blissful jaunt through a fluttery soundscape that allows for some slight improvisation before winding itself into a furious whirlwind of intensity led by Kevin Hinder’s rapid-fire guitar solo, leading the band back into the main riff like a haymaker to the dome to close out the tune… and this was just the first song.
The band’s new found appreciation for their instrumental material has led to a wellspring of new ideas and songs. Their peaks feel bigger. Their compositions feel tighter. And their songwriting feels reinvigorated. Songs like “Black Jeans”, “Burdie”, and “Slide” see the band exploring everything from deep psychedelic textures, big band melodies, soulful blues-funk rhythms, and everything in between. When the band needed some vocals, they leaned on their renaissance man Kevin Supina who is not only their sax player, but the main vocalist, as well as keyboard player. Kevin’s voice has a classic feel reminiscent of the legato-style singers of the 40s and 50s, adding a pleasant neo-nostalgia to their vocal tunes. In addition to Kevin’s vocals, the band called upon a couple of friends to add some extra personality to some choice covers. Andrew Cooney and Kind Hearted Strangers frontman, Marc Townes, loaned their vocal talents to several memorable covers. The first featured Andrew Cooney bringing everyone back to their 90s roots with a vivacious take on the New Radicals hit-single, “You Get What You Give”. Later in the set, we would see Andrew come back with Marc Townes to perform the Talking Heads tune, “Naïve Melody (This Must Be The Place)”, and lastly, the duo came back for one final hurrah during the encore as they took on the Paul Simon classic, “You Can Call Me Al”, with Marc Townes nailing Paul Simon’s verses. The ultimate sit-in of course being Chuck Morris from Lotus whose additional percussion added a welcome layer to the Envy Alo sound, punctuating each attack and rounding out the sound like a perfect pinch of seasoning to bring out the full flavor of a meal. Chuck Morris made this set delicious.
Envy Alo celebrated their record release with a throwdown in absolute style with a well-crafted set that blended a pleasant mix of their high-powered originals and well-cast sit-ins for their cover selection. The set featured a band excited for their new sound and next phase in their development, releasing a record of all instrumental material to help solidify their future sound. Clearly, The Ranch isn’t Envy Alo’s final form; it’s only the beginning.
