You can take the boy from Kansas City but don’t forget to take a gander at Extra Gold performing at The Fox Theatre!
Those who arrived early for Flash Mountain Flood’s Album Release throw-down last May were all just a little bit Country, as Denver’s own Extra Gold got the evening started with their blend of honkytonk blues and country harmonies. Having just released a record called “High & Lonesome” at the end of 2018, Extra Gold performed almost every song off of that release minus the the final track “I Can’t Help But Cry”, treating the crowd to a hearty serving of what they had to offer. Frontman Evan Holm is a commanding presence on-stage, with his powerful voice and its varying dynamics from deep crooning balladeer to honky-tonk yodeller, harking to the Golden-Era of Country music that Extra Gold takes on so well. The band members compliment each other well, with exceptional pedal steel work that Evan refers to appropriately as the “sad machine”. The staple of the country sound, its presence through each tune is deeply felt as one of the key nuances that defines the genre. The band even found some room for a couple of covers, one of which was Willie Nelson’s waltzing, “Night Life”. The ambling blues melody and the starkly aware couplet “Oh the night life ain’t no good life but it’s my life.” were delivered with poignancy and care, showing reverence to the country legend.
Extra Gold tips their hat to all those that came before them, paying homage to a classic American music sound and perpetuating its legacy with their own brand’s formula. They deliver their music with sincerity and genuine understanding of their medium, resulting in an experience so authentic, you would feel under-dressed in JUST cowboy boots. A cowboy throw-down that made Boulder feel like a tiny mining town to celebrate their brothers-in-music’s new album release.
