J.Wail Live Band | 2018-06-08 | The Fox Theatre, Boulder, CO [SBD/AUD Matrix]

It’s #TaperTuesday so you got some #FreeMusic coming your way from J.WAIL Live Band opening things up at The Fox Theatre!

Bridging two often times polar opposite genres, J.WAIL kicked off the night with a genre expanding remix of the Phish tune “Cavern”. Not just any rendition either, arguably the funkiest of renditions, from the legendary ’98 Island Tour run in Providence, RI. The result is an amalgam of techno-funk rhythms, poptastic claps and an often teased Fishman drum solo which helps further blur the line between jamfunk and electronica. The following tune introduced the live band which incorporated bass, drums and sax into the mix with J.Wail now picking up the guitar for a lead. The song starts like a giant mechanical machine being started up, working its pistons slowly until it starts to hum along in a pleasant groove with bright colors and a soaring saxophone solo that helped provide a beautifully clear voice to the song. While some tunes were more electronic in nature, the band also had some funky tunes like “Snoop” which featured wah’d out funk chords playing off the horn lines, slap funk bass and break beat drums. It’s hard to blend genres and still keep the soul of each but the J.WAIL band finds themselves able to deliver their take on each while still keeping the sound fresh and unforced. A push of the envelope in the right direction and a great way to start the night.
