You are halfway to your holiday season and lets be real…Thursday and Friday are going to be slow at work…so why not enjoy some #FreeMusic to get you through? Here is my pull of the Jaden Carlson Band!
Fronted by guitar phenom Jaden Carlson (aka the technopenguin) Jaden Carlson Band brought their blend of jazzy-funky synth-rock to the Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple stage to warm up their brothers-in-jam Particle. One of the first things you notice about this group is their versatility. Their sound can jump from more conventional jazz rock songs like “Mudflip” and “Past Times” to more electronic based tunes like “Keep It Movin'” and “Far Horizon”. This versatility absolutely starts with the band’s namesake and leader, Jaden Carlson. Her skillful ability on both the guitar and synth helps give the band the ability to easily shift gears at a moments notice. The shifts into a more electronic realm are further aided by fellow synth lord Chris Beck who, when added to the synth attack, helps propel the sound into a completely different territory. Moments like these really shine in the polished composed sections of “Machine World” which have Jaden and Chris intertwining synth lines. The synths also help frame the more direct songs like “Take It Away” which draws influence from the 80s electro-R&B revival we’ve seen in the last decade but grooves like something more modern. The crowd absolutely loved the set and even though this was the opening act, you can hear how hungry they were for an encore and the band was happy to indulge them with a ripping version of “Ziggowatt”.
On a personal note it was really cool to grab this recording. The first band I ever saw in Denver was the Jaden Carlson Band at the 1UP. It was also one of the first shows that inspired me to tape stemming from my frustration that no one taped that show. The band has only gotten better since then and it was an honor to document this performance.
