Jazz Is Phish | 2018-01-20 | Cervantes’ Other Side, Denver, CO [SBD/AUD Matrix]

Happy #TaperThursday! Did you guys put in your #Phish Lottery ticket requests yet? While you wait, enjoy the funky jazz stylings of JAZZ is PHSH headlining Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(The Other Side)!

After a sold-out, funk filled evening in the Masterpiece Ballroom paying tribute to the godfather of funk and soul James Brown, The Chase Brothers brought their talents and a new cast of musicians to The Other Side for another night paying tribute to one of the greats. Along for the ride were Reed Mathis and Todd Stoops who with Josh Raymer, helped open up the show. Both Todd and Reed sat-in for both sets of Jazz Is Phish which was a true treat for anyone in attendance. Legendary Sun Ra/ Kool & The Gang trumpeter Michael Ray helped lead up the horn section which also featured Chris Bullock of Snarky Puppy and Scott Flynn (Odesza, Pretty Lights). Together they drove the majority of the vocal melodies while also helping mirror plenty classic riffs. This provided space for Matt Chase to work his guitar magic, and work it he did. His tone was one of the highlights of the evening for me. It was like a jazzier take on his classic Ross/Tube Screamer circa ’97 tone; slightly bass heavy with full bodied sound that complimented every song perfectly.

The night was filled with musical highlights. The interpretations of “Ghost” and “46 Days” show off tight compositions and a unique take on the originals. Songs like “Gumbo” and “Alumni Blues > A Letter To Jimmy Page > Alumni Blues” sounded like they could be NOLA jazz standards driven by the dynamic horn section. They even played a newer composition of “Stash” which had a swinging big band sound. Each interpretation was its own type-of jazz interpretation, which in its essence, is very Phish.

The entire show was a fresh display of a Phish from a new perspective. Fans of Phish will love this show. Fans of Electric Beethoven will love this show. But ultimately, fans of great music will love this show. The Jazz lens can make Phish’s music more accessible to people who can’t see past some of the band’s charm, such as their oddball lyrics or extensive improvisation. The music is for everyone and that, is also, intrinsically Phish.
