You’ve been working so hard, just trying to get ahead. But the wind blows harder when you’re down. Pick you up and we’ll go for a ride, I got a recording of Kitchen Dwellers performing the early set at their recent Dine From Out There Event!

It feels weird to be writing a review for the first time in over four months. The last time I went four months without taping was before I started taping; in that, it’s never happened. Needless to say, I’ve been itching for some live music. Luckily for me, the Kitchen Dwellers, along with a few others bands, have teamed up with 11E1even Group (producers of the Live From Out There events) to create Dine From Out There, an event that pairs high-end dining with jam scene favorites for a completely unique dining experience.

I caught the early Sunday set, which featured nu-grass favorites, the Kitchen Dwellers, paired with renowned sushi chef Yoji Yamada. My wife loves sushi, but I actually never eat it, so this was quite the adventurous evening for me. However, I can say without a doubt that this was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. All four courses presented assortments of sushi/sashimi dishes that I never imagined I would even try, let alone love so much. My props to the chef, who did an incredible job curating a menu that captured even my admittingly persnickety pallet.

The music was no less impressive, as attendees were invited to a very private and intimate setting to experience the vibrancy of the Dwellers’ music. The weather pushed the event into the 11E1even Group’s office space, which was small enough that I was able to count all the fans – 23 by my count, not including wait-staff – but large enough to maintain social distancing. It wasn’t lost on me that the last time I had seen the Kitchen Dwellers happened to be just a little over a year ago at Red Rocks. Hopefully, one day we’ll go back.

The set was filled with highlights worthy of their culinary counterparts – there was an impressive cut on the always impassioned “Farmer’s Son”, which paired itself nicely with a hache instrumental “Temperance”; there was an enhanced “That’s All” served chaud, which featured a fiery jam-reduction at the end, complemented by a bien cuit instrumental “Sunday Funday”; there was a bouquet of Bill Monroe tunes featuring an aged “Salt Creek”, teasing notes of Phish’s “Bathtub Gin”, which then paired nicely with a seared “Molly And Tenbrooks”. I’m not even sure if I’m talking about music anymore…

The set followed with a take on the band’s original “Gypsy”, featuring a sit-in from Lettuce trumpeter Eric “Benny” Bloom, which added a brand new depth to not only the composed section of the song but to the jam as well, producing the longest of the evening. The set then closed with the poignant Rolling Stones tune, “No Expectations”, which was the second longest jam of the evening. Even on sushi night, you can never get enough jam.

The Kitchen Dwellers and Dine From Out There put together an event that provided a normalizing escape during an abnormal time. The music and meals tasted possibly just a bit better because there is a sense of wonder – when will we be able to come out and enjoy music again? Whether it’s sooner or later, I hope that you’re well and that you can enjoy just a taste of this shining moment, courtesy of those struggling to keep their industry alive.
