#FreeMusicFriday and #FunkyFriday collide and form our pull from Kung Fu‘s first night of a two-night headlining-run at Be On Key Psychedelic Ripple!
There are certain bands that you can always count on to give you a hell of a show. They just always feel “on”. Kung Fu is one of those band’s for me. I’ve never seen a lackluster or low-energy set from these guys. They always play with a fierce determination and exceptional musicianship. Just listen to the beginning of the show, the moment you hear Tim Palmier’s blistering guitar work on the opening “Bottleneck” punctuated by the tight rhythm and horn section, you know this band funks. The entire set is full of moments of articulated funk riffs, intermingling start-stop solos and more than a few psychedelic funk jams that helped melt the sound out a bit. One of my personal highlights was the insane encore “Gung Ho” which brought the band to a real jammy space, shifting through several different grooves and leaving the Psychedelic Ripple crowd dizzy from the onslaught of the psychedelic funk tornado that just ripped through. Non-stop, high energy psychedelic funk are all words I want to see together and Kung Fu knows the formula. Fantastic set to start off their run.
