The words are hard to come by about how it all made sense that night, so I’ll just leave it to lespecial performing at Beanstalk Music Festival to help me remember…
Coming off a monster throw-down the previous night, where the band performed Primus’ “Frizzle Fry” in its entirety, Lespecial was given a second night to treat the inhabitants of Bean World to a more original set of trashy groove metal with hints of EDM and dub, like some kind of Pretty Hate Machine era Trent Reznor on ecstasy. From the set-opening notes of an airy electronica ballad titled “Repeater”, the band commandeers the audience and builds them up with the ebb and flow of a DJ, establishing a mutual understanding, between them and the crowd, that the drop is coming any moment. What’s really impressive is how by the second tune, “Machine Elf Production Co.”, the band starts with a similar vibe but eventually crushes into a sharp metal riff jam that may have been jarring to a crowd that didn’t grow up listening to Tool and dubstep all within a span of 20 years. Like a not-so-evil evolution of KMFDM, Lespecial are masters of combining metal riffs and dance club energy in a way that seems perfectly normal. Songs like “Fruit Wolf Dance” and the eloquently titled “What’s Crappenin’” blend metal and ground rumbling bass grooves, which are usually reserved for EDM clubs, in a chaotic soup that is so enticing you just have to dig in no matter how hot it is.
I don’t know how many different ways I can say that Lespecial is a genre in and of themselves. I could keep saying it. I want to keep saying it. But I’ll just let the set speak for itself and end by noting that this set was particularly important to the festival, as the crowd was battered, tired, and wet, but still hungry for a return to normalcy… and normalcy to #TeamBean is definitely raging a late-night Lespecial set in the beautiful Bond, Colorado valley.

Show Notes: This set was performed as part of the 9th annual Beanstalk Music Festival. This was the band’s second set of the weekend.
Taper Notes: Mics setup FOB DFC raised around 7′ PAS. Board feed was split off of the PA sends but does not have the subs mixed in. As a result, the recording is matrixed with the audience feed to provide low-end as well as ambient sound. Thanks to sound engineer Richard Hartanft for the patch and mix!
