What is the look of love? Not sure, but the sound is possibly ManyColors opening things up at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(Other Side)!

Fans who were smart enough to come out a bit early for Live For Live Music‘s second installment of the Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom Funk Sessions were treated to the lo-fi jazz stylings of J Dilla tribute Many Colors. The group is comprised of Eric Luba (Analog Son – keys), Kirwan Brown (Link Wray / Stanley Jordan – bass), Braxton Kahn (The Workshy – drums) and fronted by Brant Williams (The Workshy / Judo Chop) on guitar. Their interpretations of the legendary producer’s compositions are a conglomerate of ethereal beats and colorful leads melded together in a sound that feels incredibly fresh and engrossing. An evolution of sound based on The King Of Beats’ downtempo hip-hop attack put through a jazzwave filter. Through beautifully dynamic interpretations of the original works, Many Colors paints a dreamy wave of sound that splashes over listeners and drifts them off into a undulating sea of hooks and melodies. As incredibly rich and fulfilling as their interpretations of J Dilla’s work are (and I cannot over-state this enough) – it may be even more compelling to hear the band’s original material, which takes the essence of the soundscape inspired by J Dilla and creates something new, evolving the tribute into something more expansive. They performed one of their digital singles, “Bangs”, which was recently released by Color Red, the record label run by New Mastersounds guitarist Eddie Roberts. The tune has the swagger of a hip hop melody with the sharp pointed direction of a jazz number, all while riding the band’s unique gaze-like affect. Its sister single “Gladys” (which was released earlier that day) presents a similar flavor and experience that is the core of what makes Many Colors so absorbing. A starkly original sound derived from a tribute to a truly ground-breaking artist.
