If life is a box of crayons, I like my chances with ManyColors opening things up at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom(Other Side)!

The pioneer of abstract art, Wassily Kandinsky, once said “Color is a power which directly influences the soul”, which makes sense to me because ManyColors performing at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom spoke to that power. The sonic textures the band implements with their compositions paint a canvas that synthesizes smooth jazz, hip hop, and breakbeats into a dreamlike stupor that flows over the crowd in blissful waves of harmonious grooves and melodious leads. It’s the music you listen to when you want to reflect or study. It’s the music you listen to late at night coding a project or immersing yourself down an internet rabbit hole. It’s the kind of music the people over at Adult Swim salivate over. Even with the band sans a bassist, keyboardist Eric Luba showed that his left hand is a musical force to be reckoned with, while drummer Braxton Kahn held down the rhythm section with a committed confidence. Lead guitarist and frontman, Brant Williams, led the band impeccably through a set list featuring originals and a few choice covers that span the band’s various tribute forms, from Nirvana (“Come As You Are”) to J Dilla (“Lightworks”) tributes, and they even snuck in a cover of Radiohead’s “Packt Like Sardines In A Crushd Tin Box”. The band also performed all three of their singles released through Color Red (“Gladys”, “Rust”, and “Bangs”), the originals of which feel the most compelling, as the band has created a style that feels so fresh and original.

ManyColors hits that spiritual spot hard and often. The musical space they occupy is an amalgam of genres that tints our perception and provides a soundtrack to our subconscious. It’s the spirit of each respective genre that draws the band’s inspiration and, in turn, inspires us all.
