Everybody gets a little crazy sometimes and the cure is Mike Gordon performing at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre!

The cactus himself brought along his band to the coveted Red Rocks Amphitheatre to usher in what would be for many their first show of the always highly anticipated Red Rocks concert season. The band performed a big chunk of songs off of Mike’s most recent 2017 release “OGOGO”, the first of which, “Whirlwind”, opened the show, providing a punchy chorus and a frantic jam. The next tune was another song off of “OGOGO”, “Stealing Jamaica”. The tune stayed true to its namesake and brought a Caribbean flair, accented with the electronic quips of a synthesizer. It featured an upbeat jam that centered around the whirling notes of the synth and the reggae chord progression. The band followed with a psychedelic two-tab-dose of “Acid Man” into a cover of The Flaming Lips’ “Are You A Hypnotist??” that featured the highlight jam segments of the set, as the band found time for a couple of brief excursions into psychedelia, both of which were propelled into the stratosphere by Scott Murawski‘s potent guitar work. While the set list then dictated “Sughn”, the band audibled and covered a Phish tune penned by Mike, the fan-favorite “Meat”. The tune contained a ripping zapped-out bass solo from Mike, which evolved into a quick funk jam before seguing back into the original part of the plan, “Sughn”. The band then performed the second cover of the evening, a take on Jon Cleary’s “Got To Be More Careful” which kept things funky, followed by another track off of “OGOGO”, the contemplative “Steps”. The set then closed out with another fan-favorite, “Crazy Sometimes”. Now a Phish staple as well, the tune was recognized by the majority of the crowd and served as a fitting way to end the set as the building chorus rumbled over the Red Rocks stairs.

Mike Gordon Band gives fans a new angle from which to enjoy the quirky mastery of Mike Gordon’s musical prowess and personality. It is both weird but then immediately rewarding to hear Mike Gordon speak to the audience, something he seldomly does with Phish. A treat for any Phish fan looking to experience one of the many musical schisms that make up Phish solo projects.
