Rip off all my limbs, Poke out both my eyes, Pull out my swollen tongue…orrrr just check out Moe. headlining Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre!
After stellar sets by both Mike Gordon and White Denim, Moe. felt shot-out-of-a-cannon for their headlining spot at the fabled venue, starting things off with a 16+ minute take on their oft-jammed fan-favorite “Timmy Tucker” which eventually segued into the commonly paired “Tubing The River Styx > The Pit”. The result was a 25+ minute segment of jam rock that hit Red Rocks fans right between the eyes, calling everyone to attention and announcing Moe. with a hearty, “Whoah”. The second set would open in a similar fashion, taking “The Road” and seguing into “New Hope For The New Year” then into “Bullet” for an even meatier chunk to open set number two.
One of the biggest highlights of the evening was Mike Gordon sitting-in to close out the first set for an inspired take on The Allman Brothers classic “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed”. Al Schnier‘s keys work helped frame Chuck Garvey‘s guitar work with impeccable nuance that carried the segment through its primary half. But the real star is the sit-in from Mike Gordon. The jam was the longest of the evening and the most endearing, especially during the bass-off between Mike and Rob that was met with delighted cheers from the crowd.
The second set contained several peak moments of its own, the powerful opener as mentioned earlier, as well as solid takes on “Crushing”, “George” and the set closer as well as arguably their most popular song, “Rebubula”. The band even enjoyed a true rock ‘n’ roll moment as they performed the encore. At the 2:58 mark of their bouncy cover of The Vapors’ “Turning Japanese”, the clock struck 12:00am which is curfew at Red Rocks. The lights were flipped on and the PA was cut. The band gave us a few more bars before bidding farewell. I wonder when the last time Moe. played until the venue cut them off was?
Moe. laid it all out on the Red Rocks steps in two sets packed to the gills with engaging moments, a masterful sit-in and a true rock and roll encore, showing just what 30 years in the business can accomplish. Cheers to them and their legacy.

Show Notes: This was a headlining show. White Denim opened, followed by Mike Gordon Band, then Moe.
[1] “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” featured Mike Gordon (Phish / Mike Gordon Band) on bass.
[2] “Turning Japanese” was unfinished. At exactly 12:00am MST the band had gone over their curfew. The house lights were turned on and the PA was cut which led to the song being unfinished.
Taper Notes: Setup behind the soundboard DFC (row 16 taper section) – mics raised around 6′ PAS.
Thank you to Moe. and Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater for being cool with taping/sharing shows. Go see live music and tip your bartenders! #spacetapes
