Won’t you meet me in the valley for a set of Part & Parcel performing at Beanstalk Music Festival?!

Change can be a great thing, and Beanstalk Festival veterans Part & Parcel gave credence to that with their set at this year’s event, which showcased a new line-up featuring lead guitarist Matt Flaherty. His contribution provides a new depth to the band’s sound, adding crunchy riffs and engaging leads that elevate the band’s jammier moments and help better frame their compositions. It adds a refreshingly compelling element to the band’s sound: furious shredding, which has invigorated their ability to jam out their songs. The first two tunes, “Down In The Valley” and “Happy Hour”, help highlight this with both jams being ultimately driven by Matt’s lead work.

The band fit in some solid cover choices in addition to their originals, including a tribute to the recently departed Jeff Austin with a cover of Todd Snider’s “Side Show Blues”, which was a favorite of Austin’s. They also performed a cover of The Wood Brothers’ “River Takes The Town” off their 2018 record “One Drop Of Truth”, as well as an out-of-left-field take on Rage Against The Machine’s “Killing In The Name Of”, which transitioned out of the Matt Flahery penned “Neighborhood”. The set then closed out with a cover of Prince’s party anthem “1999”, which featured sit-ins from members of Kessel Run, as well as everyone’s favorite percussion player, Will Trask.

Part & Parcel’s new sound is a welcome step in a new direction, opening them up to more absorptive jamming and inspired moments. Their set at this year’s fest was filled with highlights and fresh takes on fan-favorites, showing promise for what the future holds for Beanstalk’s favorite bluegrass act.

Show Notes: This set was performed at the seventh annual Beanstalk Music & Mountains Festival.
[1] “Side Show Blues” was dedicated to Jeff Austin (Yonder Mountain String Band) who had recently passed away.
[2] “1999” featured Kevin Supina (Envy Alo) on saxophone, Nolan Caine (Kessel Run) on keys, Alex Cazet (Kessel Run) on tenor saxophone, Kirk Larson (Kessel Run) on drums and Will Trask (Analog Son) on back-up percussion.

Taper Notes: FOB DFC Mics raised around 10′ DIN. The PA wasn’t turned on for the first few seconds of the set so I amplified the AUD mics to level that out. Thanks to FOH engineer Andrew Waltman for the board patch and mix!

Thank you to Part & Parcel and Beanstalk Music Festival for being cool with taping/sharing shows. Go see live music and support your local artists! #spacetapes
